We measure our impact

Our emission reduction targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and classified 1.5°C-aligned, the most ambitious trajectory available. We do not declare sustainability: we measure it, year after year, with verifiable numbers.

Our climate commitment

We do not declare sustainability: we measure it. Our emission reduction trajectory has been assessed and validated by an independent third party, the Science Based Targets initiative, and aligned with what climate science requires. As a 43-person SME in the IT sector, we are among the first in Italy to reach this milestone.

The numbers of our footprint

We measured our Organizational Carbon Footprint for the 2024 base year. Complete numbers, calculated in-house, the starting point of our targets.

  • 47.24 tCO₂e Total emissions (location-based). 45.83 market-based.
  • 0 tCO₂e Scope 1 and Scope 2 (market-based). 100% renewable energy.
  • 1.10 tCO₂e Intensity per employee.

97% of emissions are Scope 3

Indirect value-chain emissions are the core of our commitment. This is where we act.

  • Commuting and remote work 38%
  • Business travel 22%
  • IT purchases 20%
  • Capital goods 19%

Annual reporting

We update these numbers every year. Transparency is part of the target.

Our targets

WHERE WE WANT TO BE BY 2030

Our near-term targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative through the streamlined route for SMEs, aligned with the 1.5°C trajectory (scope 1 and 2). Base year 2024, target year 2030. SBTi ID 40017722.

Scope 1: we maintain zero emissions through 2030. Scope 2: we commit to reduce absolute emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year. Scope 3: we commit to measure and reduce them.

"Sparkfabrik commits to maintain zero scope 1 emissions through 2030. Sparkfabrik also commits to reduce absolute scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions."

Our actions

On the 97% of Scope 3 emissions we act with concrete levers, not offsets. Here is where we intervene.

100% renewable energy

Certified green energy (A2A): the reason Scope 1 and 2 are at zero market-based.

Remote-first model

90% remote work: less commuting, fewer emissions from the heaviest item of our footprint.

Low-carbon cloud

Choosing low-carbon cloud regions and optimizing resources to reduce infrastructure impact.

Train-first travel

Sustainable travel policy: train before plane when possible, on the second emissions item.

Hardware lifecycle

We extend the life of IT devices to reduce purchases and capital goods, the third and fourth items of the footprint.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about sustainability and climate targets

  • Yes. SparkFabrik's emission reduction targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) through the streamlined route for SMEs and classified as 1.5°C-aligned. SBTi ID 40017722, base year 2024, target year 2030.

  • The validated near-term targets are:

    • Scope 1: maintain zero emissions through 2030

    • Scope 2: reduce absolute emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year

    • Scope 3: measure and reduce them

Official SBTi target language: "Sparkfabrik commits to maintain zero scope 1 emissions through 2030. Sparkfabrik also commits to reduce absolute scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions."

  • It is the most ambitious classification of the Science Based Targets initiative: the targets are consistent with the 1.5°C global warming limit set by the Paris Agreement.

  • This is the GHG Protocol classification:

    • Scope 1: direct emissions from company-controlled sources

    • Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy

    • Scope 3: value chain emissions, upstream and downstream

For a software company, Scope 3 is the largest share and the hardest to measure.

  • On the public registry of the Science Based Targets initiative, by searching for SparkFabrik or the identifier SBTi ID 40017722. The validation can be checked by anyone.

  • Because it enters customers' selection criteria and their own reporting obligations. A supplier with validated, measurable targets contributes verifiably to customers' Scope 3, instead of adding untracked emissions.
