A hands-on workshop on GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code: the Ask, Edit and Agent chat modes, and how to fit them to the way a team works.
The workshop.
A SparkFabrik workshop on GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code, beyond code completion: how it works and how to use it across the development cycle.
Luca Lusso showed the three main chat modes and when to use each:
- Ask, to ask questions and reason about the code without changing it.
- Edit, to change the open files under the developer’s control, when the changes are clear.
- Agent, which works across several files and calls external tools to reach a goal.
Then customization. Participants learned to:
- create custom chat modes for specific tasks, such as research or planning;
- direct requests with participants (
@workspace,@terminal); - define reusable custom prompts, called as slash commands;
- set custom instructions with the project guidelines, applied to every request.
